Major Mom FAIL. :(

Something terrifying happened today.

We were going about our usual day, playing, eating, watching a little TV. Bennett was by the door, playing with the dog dishes, as per usual.

I had to pee, so I ran to the bathroom real quick and shut the door behind me cause Bennett likes to come in behind me and try to stick his hands in the toilet.

I came out, made a bottle for Bennett. I soon realized that he wasn't messing with the dog dishes anymore. I wandered to his room.. nope... he wasn't in there.

I went to check our room, no... Bennett isn't in here either. Oh I know, he's on the other side of the couch, playing under the computer... like he always is. So I walk over there, sure to find him there. No, he's not there.

Wait... WHERE IS MY BABY!???!!!

The panic seriously set in. I have a small apartment (2 bed 2 bath to be exact), there is only so many places he could be! I ran around from room to room frantically calling out his name, checking in every closet. He was NO where to be found.

I walked back out to the living room, look over at the door, thought... "there is NO way he could have gotten out of the apartment"... but... I open the front door, turn right to run down the hallway, nope not there. I'm seriously FREAKING OUT at this point.

I decided to go all the way to the other side of the building... and there he was. Sitting by a plant, happy as a clam.... in front of someone else's apartment. I swooped him up and cried.

How could I have let something like this happen?!??! I'm thanking the Lord that we live inside a secure building because who knows what would have happened if our front door opened up to the outside.

My baby was safe, but OH MY GOSH.  I have never felt so scared.

And the silly thing, is that I ALWAYS keep the door locked. And the one time I forgot, Bennett realizes how to open the door and get OUT! Are you kidding me???

Needless to say, I have learned my lesson.

Oh girl that's happened to all of us I'm sure. I've had at least two of those scares!! You have nonidea what they're capable of doing until they do something like that! It's so scary!! But don't be hard on yourself. He's safe and those kind of things just happen. You're a wondeful mommy!

Yikes! That is terrifying! Glad he is safe! When we used to live in a secure building there was a three year old who did the same thing, she was wandering around and trying to get into the elevator with us.

the worst feeling ever! as i was unloading groceries one afternoon, phoenix was sitting by the back door watching me. in and out unloading groceries. as i carried the last load in, i shut the door and went to the kitchen to put everything away. looking out the window, i realized i had forgotten to shut the door on our vehicle and so i quickly went out to shut it and then came back in. as i resumed putting the groceries away, i noticed that phoenix was not around so i started to look around for her calling her name. i searched the entire house and she was nowhere. i ran outside and looked everywhere and she was nowhere. i started screaming and freaking out and i ran to all the neighbors asking if they had seen her and to help me look for her. i was two seconds from calling the police when i noticed i little head just barely peeking over the top of the steering wheel in our vehicle. while i was unloading groceries, she had gotten out of the house, gotten in the van, and quietly began to play. i of course came out and shut the door on her. not once did i see her leave, get in the van, or even when i went back to shut the door. literally the worst feeling in the world.

i had a very similar situation with my mom's dog one time. i thought that was a horrible feeling until it happened to my own child. scary!

so glad he is okay! so glad!

hi. i am new to your blog. you have a beautiful family. found your blog through the paper mama. :) my oldest son when he was 2 1/2 wondered away from me while we were outside, i was feeding our dog. we live out in the country but near a busy road (we don't have a fence). i screamed for him when he was not in my sight, and ran to find him. found him near one of our bulidings playing with rocks. scared me to death. this happens to all of us. :)

That is so scary, but rest assured, it happens to us all at some point. I left my firstborn downstairs for TWO MINUTES one time and came back to find her chewing on batteries that we in a cabinet that I never knew she could get into. I totally freaked, called poison control, etc. and all was well - but just like you, I learned my lesson. Those babies are fast! I feel you though - I'm sure he got lots of extra hugs today :)

Oh my, I can imagine you were scared. That little rascal :-)

*Hug* Don't feel like you failed. You didn't. You're a mom. You're human. You are doing the best you can and even more than that and that is more than anyone ask of you. And sometimes things can happen. Things you didn't expect. It happens to all of us. Even to sweet and loving moms like you.

Glad to know he's ok! I was getting nervous reading your post. Everyone's done something. Don't beat yourself up over it to bad, we all make mistakes and learn not to do it again.

What a super smart little boy to have figured out how to open up the front door! :) Don't feel like you failed! I'm sure we all could make post after post of things we've done! :)

I am pretty sure if you checked my pulse and blood pressure right now......IT WOULD BE ELEVATED. Holy cow, stuff like that scares me to death.

Just this morning, I look at Bennett, in the high chair and realize he is not breathing. I jerk him out, pound his back, do the heimlich maneuver and out pops the peach........falls to the floor. I take a deep breath and thank God that B was OKAY

I know that feeling so well. Jr hid in a clothes rack at the mall. I was screaming his name, crying. My friend trying to help. He was right beside the stroller the whole time and came out laughing thinking he did nothing wrong.

So glad little B is okay!

Wow :( I can't imagine what you were feeling!! I freak out when I can't find Roxy out back and she's behind a tree or something. I'm so glad everything turned out well, that is scary!

Oh my goodness, that is really scary. You must have beyond scared. Thank goodness, all is OK. This (unfortunately) is just one of the scary moments we have in store for us. Hugs to you!

Your son sounds as curious as mine. I tried baby locks and my little man took them off. Sigh. Needless to say, I never "potty" alone and I can no longer take my eyes off of him for ONE second (unless of course I want him standing on the kitchen counter, running half way down the street, or eating cat food)!!!

Welcome to the world of overly curious boys! Wait till he runs ;)

He opened the door?! What a smart kid. Glad it all turned out okay and now you know!

OMGOOOOOOSH. I would've died. Right then and there. Thankfully he was okay. Don't beat yourself up about it though, things like this happen as a way for us to be prepared and know better for next time! I'm so glad he was okay!

What is WITH these babies getting all grown up on us, huh?! lol

That is sooo scary. Dustyn just learned how to turn the handle. I can't believe Bennett can open the door. Crazy! Glad he is okay!

My heart was beating so fast reading that post. I've been in a similar situation with going to the bathroom and then coming back with my little girl no where to be found. She was in the bathroom all the way at the other end of the house in our closet! I was in full panic mode looking around the house and only imagining what she could be in to. But thank goodness he is okay, take a deep breath Mama, it happens to the best of us!!

Ugh! I felt sick just reading your story - that is so scary, it almost takes you to your knees. I was in a store with Collin when he was a little older than Bennett (maybe 2 or so)...I was talking with lady for two seconds; I turn around and he is GONE. I thought I was going to pass out. It was night time (totally dark out), and he had got OUT of the store because he heard a train passing by the back of the building. Oh man, I thought I was going to die.

What a relief you found your baby so quickly!!! And praise God for His hand of protection! ♥

Wow! That is so scary! Don't feel like you totally failed... babies are crazy! If I remember correctly your door isn't exactly EASY to open... He's very talented!

See this is what happens when I dont read my blogs everday. I AM SO SORRY that is the scariest thing as a mom. I hate to admit it but I have lost Ryan in the store before and I about died. Dont feel like a bad mom it happens to everyone. Get some child locks and hug him extra tight.

Bless your heart - this has happened to me so many times, but only with my little man. My girls never even tried. I know how scary it feels!! Josiah has found ways to escape and go visit neighbors at least half a dozen times in his little three year old life.
