Take pictures of youself. It's important.

This topic has come up several times by a few of my favorite bloggers, Chelsey wrote an awesome post called "owning your self portraits". And Jess also wrote a post called "the importance of a self portrait on your blog". Both of these ladies are queens of the selfies. They inspire me.

Okay but wait. Why am I talking about this?

When I started blogging years ago, I hardly ever had pictures of myself on the blog because I was always behind that camera. When I started to gain more readers, make more friends, put myself out there in the blogging world more - I realized that I needed to step it up a little bit with photos of myself.

And here's why:

When people visit your blog, it's like they are taking a step into your world. They are reading stories about you, your family, your kids. They're seeing pictures of your home, your city & your loved ones.

It's super important to let your readers/peers/friends (whatever you want to call them) see WHO you are. Being able to put a face to the words & stories makes a huge difference when you're getting to know someone. Of course, there are the skeptics out there that like their privacy, and I definitely understand this - that is why we have the option to make our blogs private  - by invitation only. But by having a public blog, you're allowing people to get to know you on a personal level, and trust me - they want to see who you are. I have made some incredible friends through my blog (examples: here, here & here). And even though I met these ladies through the internet first, I felt like I had already known them for years. And that was in large part because they weren't shy about letting their readers see who they were by posting pictures of themselves.

You get my point, right?

Now onto the awkward stuff. I'm sure a lot of people think that putting pictures of themselves on their blog might seem vein or self-absorbed. But that really isn't the case for most of us. Obviously, you don't want to OVER-do it with the selfies, but don't be shy about it, either.

Also, most of us don't have photographers following us around, not that I'd want that anyway, but you know what I mean. It's hard to get photos of ourselves. I know that I'm super picky about having my picture taken, it has to be my idea and on my terms. So if you're like me - taking self portraits are a challenge. However, we all have timers on our cameras right? I also have a remote & a tripod, which I admit I never use. But if I did, that would be a great way to do it. If you don't have a camera, you have a camera on your phone, right? See... no excuses. :-)

If all else fails, just hold your camera out at arms length. That's what I do most of the time. Cause well, I'm too lazy to get my remote & tripod. Or even ask someone to take a picture for me. But hey, it works.

don't be afraid to look RIGHT into the camera. That is after all, how most people see you when you're talking to them. be real.
{although i admit this is kind of a creepy photo of me, the angle isn't flattering at all. ha ha}
it's okay to do some girly, flirty photos. we all do them. isn't this why our husbands all fell in love with us? ;-)

also, make some funny faces if that's who you are. i'm can be pretty silly and quirky sometimes and so i like to let that shine through.

and lastly, don't be afraid to show your "bad side". this is my bad side. i hate this side of my face for some reason. but... it exists and so i will show it to you. like i said... be real! it's good.

Anywho, I'm definitely not the most confident girl in the world, and I have my flaws. But I am who I am, and so... that's what you get to see. So I challenge you to take a few more photos of yourself and put yourself out there. It's okay, really, it is. Your friends/readers will love it. :)

Great post! I was just thinking that I really don't have many photos of me, especially since my son was born...time to get on it!

Love this!  You are so pretty Mandy!  I am the worst at selfies.  I take 100 before I even like 1.

You are so pretty, girlie and we are our own worst critics. What we see is not what you see, so thanks for being you and showing us all the wonderful sides of you. :)

Love this! I like how you explained it too. I, for some reason, began liking to take photos by holding my point and shoot that I got in HS at arm’s length with my sister. No one could ever get a better picture of me than I could doing it myself! HA! Now - even with a small blog I sometimes feel vain posting pictures of myself - especially if I think I look pretty in them...CRAZY right?! Am I fishing for compliments? - No (well sometimes) but too often I'd take 100 photos of some event and I was in none - made me kind of sad...so I bought a remote and always ask for my picture to be taken with my son now.
I also feel I have a bad side - so you'll almost always have an angle that highlights the left side of my face =) You look beautiful though (I really like taking photos when I was pregnant - I'm a weirdo).

You look so cute! I just don't feel like I'm stylish or that pretty at all. So taking photos of myself is difficult. I need to be better about this because someday I will regret not having photos of me with my kids!

i love this post. it is so true, we as bloggers allow others to see us...some all our sides others, not the case. but i love to see photos of others...it helps me connect when i read. i totaly feel silly sometimes puting photos up, but then i tell myself it is my blog and why would i put a ton of photos of other people all the time. thanks for posting this! :)

Just added pics of myself to my blog! You're right, I hardly even have any pics of myself....other than from my wedding which was 4 years ago! Sad!!!

Thank you! :)

Thank you!! And for the diptych I just use a color fill in photoshop!! Super easy! :)

Thanks Molly!! And I know what you mean about not feeling stylish or pretty. But that isn't really the point! Your readers like you for who you are, and they will like you weather you are all dolled up, or in your PJs with no make-up! And you're right - you won't regret having pictures of yourself, and with your kids! :)

Oh I totally always take photos at arms length. I feel like I have more control over things that way. Ha ha. Not to mention, I'm usually not pleased with the way I look in full body shots... that's something I need to work on!!

mandy at asortafairytale said...

That's so true Misty! It's taken me a long time to come out of my shell, and I'm not even quite there yet.. but I'm trying :)

I don't know what you're talking about girl, I LOVE your selfies, you're so pretty!

mandy at asortafairytale said...

He he really?? I think my son looks so much like my Husband. It's nice to hear that people still see a little of me in him :)

mandy at asortafairytale said...

Oh I'm so glad at least some people are getting something from this post! I was worried I would just be putting silly pictures of myself up and people would make fun of me!  :)

Ack!  Self portraits are so hard!  You always look beautiful, and you do NOT have a bad side!

Amen! Amen! Mandy! I agree 100%.  I love seeing photos of those that I read, it makes it so much more personal.  I've just started doing the self portraits  and get better and better.  Like they say, "practice makes perfect."  Blessings!

Love this post.  It's sooo true! I love putting a face with a blog/name.  I rarely post self portraits of myself on my blog so it's time to change that.  Looking back I barely have posts of myself with my kiddos as I'm always behind the camera.  Thanks for the inspiration!

You are so right, I never take pics of myself, I need to get better at that. I should have made you take my picture when I saw you the other week ;)

Tara said...

is part of the picture cut off then? Or how do you create that extra space? and how do you create the white stripe in between?

I loved this post! You touched on really good points!

Love all of these - you have inspired me to do more "real" self portraits :)

Followed a link to you from Stephanie's blog and I really like this post. It makes a lot of sense!
I've always felt very self-concious about posting heaps of photos of myself on my blog, though, because I don't think I'm very photogenic. :S Oh well, maybe I should just get over it. :P
I love your blouse/shirt btw, it's so cute! :)

I have a template action that I use. I put the picture in one side and the color fill in the other side.

I have never heard this point of view on self-portraits. Very thought provoking, Mandy. I'm definitely one of the shy ones when it comes to self-portraits, but you've made me re-think this insecurity, or whatever it is. Why don't I post more pictures of myself?? If it helps make new bloggy friends, why not? Again, I'm sad that  will be missing out on the meet-up this weekend. California better be worth it.

Hi - I'm your newest follower! I found your blog from a friend while her and I were trying to figure out exactly how it is so many bloggers have the nerve to not only take photos of themselves, but to do it in front of other people, especially in public places. Anyway, I really liked your post and you are cute as a button, I look forward to reading more!
