Please please please WATERMARK!

I wrote a post awhile back about how important it is to watermark your images where it can't be cropped or cloned out easily.  Unfortunately, I didn't always do that. And even recently I have started slacking off again.

I was just informed that someone stole pictures of Bennett from my blog, from his first birthday... and was claiming "he was their son named Tyler."

This is so infuriating. It creeps me out to think that someone would steal pictures of my baby and claim him as her own. Makes me second guess putting any pictures up of my kids, you know?? If anything, this reinforces the importance of plastering my watermark all over my pictures!!

Will definitely be reporting this chick.

These are screen grabs from her profile. :-(

Someone obviously caught on to what she was doing and called her out. She flat out lied. This makes me so sad.

I've had someone do this to me before. Twice, actually. I went a long time without posting photos of my children, before I found the courage again. People are crazy! It's the risk we take, putting our lives out there the way we do, so watermarking is SO SO important!!

This angers me so much. Just last month I was contacted by a friend that had her images stolen & when she was looking at them she recognized images of my girls & myself that had been taken from my blog. I am not on FB so it made it incredibly difficult to get them removed. I posted about it here
http://www.chichomeschoolmama.com/2012/07/colorado-fire-wrap-up.html She was actually making comments about how my daughter was up all night sick & all sorts of other things as if my girl's were her's. Absolutely disgusting that someone is so sick in the head to not only takes ones images but to then pass them off as their kids. What is wrong with these people??!! I ended up right click disabling just the images on my blog & I also edit the coding in each & every post (& had to go back through & edit all 750+ back posts) to prevent the left clicking on images which opens in a new window & can then be right clicked from there. This prompted a series of posts for me on this topic of how to protect images better. AND I changed my watermark to my URL so there is no confusion & I make it large across the image now too. I could actually see my watermark on my images she was using. Guess she figured it was small enough & the names were so similar that she could get away with it. Hence the URL watermark instead. Oh the hours of my life that were sucked away by this one person. I'm grateful that FB finally shut her down- but it was a nightmare. I'm so sorry it has now happened to you. Hoping the blogging platforms can come up with a solution to help us protect our content better because I know of at least a few more work arounds for those that really want to take what we are posting- which is just sad.

Wow, that's awful and really creepy! There are some really sick people in this world. :( This motivates me to pray and be more intentional about sharing the Good News with people because they need to hear it and respond to God.

How WEIRD!!! That is creepy, and obviously something is not completely right with her. When I first read your post about watermarking, I'll be honest with you, I thought you were being paranoid. Not anymore! You're right, I am wrong. Watermarking will now be on all of my pictures.

I really can't stand it when people do crazy things like this! It's sad and wrong!! This is the main reason I recently switched to wordpress and pretty much all posts containing pictures of my daughter will be password protected or members only because I'm getting too lazy to watermark them all haha. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this though! :(

That Mama Gretchen said...

This is so awful! I am so so sorry you're dealing with it :( I had bookmarked your last post on watermarking and kept telling myself that I was going to start soon. Now I really am! Thanks for being open with what's going on - hoping it all gets cleared up ASAP!

I've been following on Fb. It is still so disturbing. And Now I will make sure to do watermarking. Makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it. What did your hubby say?

Nicole said...

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry! I wrote something about watermarking a while back because of a few stories I had read. Of course I have been slacking also- this freaks me out! I hope she takes them down asap! So sick that someone would do something like that!

THAT is so freakin disturbing seriously- I actually started watermarking all my photos since that post of yours a few weeks back but I did not do it for a long time - god I would freak if I saw a picture of my daughter on someone else's profile - that is creepy and has to be a crime of some sort- NOT TO MENTION what kind of a sicko does that crap?!?!! That is creepy stuff! THanks for making this known so we all can be careful about our beloved children's pictures. Makes me sick!

b.perry@live.fr said...

I was wondering how did the person found out the pictured was yours ? I have a fb "friend" who as pictures of an adorable baby boy and claims him.as hers. But the watermark don't match up her name. And she also have some other pictures of her "son" but they don't look like the same child.

Anyway the water mark says Rebecca Hatcher. If anyone is willing to help me?

Helena said...

What a nut job! Seriously! I read about this on twenty five design and I was mortified! I'm reading about this a lot lately and it seems to be a more common occurrence (people stealing pictures)! It's amazing how crazy people are! I've been water marking for awhile now but in the corner of my images as I didn't want to ruin a great picture with a logo/text across the subject. I've since changed my mind especially seeing as about 90% of my pictures are of my little one. I've got to protect her. We all have to protect ourselves and our loved ones! BTW, I'm your newest follower. I've been here before awhile ago and thought I was following you already; I guess I wasn't. I look forward to returning and reading more of your posts! :o)
