Is Instagram replacing blogging?

I think it would be fair to say that I'm pretty obsessed with Instagram. I love being able to snap a photo with my iPhone, throw a hashtag (or 20 hashtags) on it, and then upload it to my feed for all to see. I also very much enjoy the creativity that can go into it, composing an image, and editing it just right. It's an art form, really. Instagram has also become a community I look to for support. I can quickly ask a question and within minutes, I have mounds of amazing support and advise flooding in. It's like a mini version of blogger. Yes?

Which is what got me thinking.

Instagram is genius, and it's a pretty big craze right now. But is the Instagram sensation kind of taking the place of blogging? I think that it's starting to, for a lot of people. I've noticed more of my favorite bloggers posting less & less to their actual blog, and IGing more & more. To be honest, I can't blame them. Like I said, Instagram is a fabulous place to not only keep all of the important "milestone" photos in one place and categorize them with hashtags, but meet other like-minded people. So in that regard, I get totally it.

But I'm wondering, will that eventually happen to me? Every once in a while, I will find myself slipping off the blogging radar because I'm semi-satisfied with the community on Instagram. And I say "semi-satisfied" not because I don't love the people I've met there, but because even though I love it, my blog is my home. Ya know?

This place, this is my turf. This is the place I want my friends and famiy to come to find out what we've been up to, or read about my deep dark secrets. ;-) This is where I can write an entire novel about my parenting mishaps or victories, and not feel like I'm clogging up a feed. The people that visit and comment here, aren't just thumbing through their feed and quickly passing me by. The people that come to my actual blog, make a deliberate visit. And I appreciate that so much!

What do you think about the Instagram phenomenon? Can you see a shift in blogging frequency now that IG has blown up into such a huge community?

I love Instagram! But, I love that you can interact more, tell a story, put words to your photos (more than just a caption), share stories, share feelings, etc. via blogging.

I love IG! HUGE fan! But I agree...blogging gives us a bigger platform to really get into the nitty-gritty ;) A lot of my family & other non-IG friends visit my blog to catch up with us! So, keeping up with both is something I try to do.

I love love love Instagram, but I have to say I haven't noticed a huge shift! I'll always be true to my blog because I love to write too much to use Instagram more. :)

I agree with you so much on this. In some ways I think the IG community is even MORE supportive than my blog. It also takes much less time/money to maintain. I have definitely fallen off the blogging radar and I attribute much of it to my obsession with IG!

I do see a lot more of a community on IG. But you can't be super detailed with you account without clogging someone's feed. I find myself wanting to post a bunch of pictures but holding back bc I don't want to annoy people. At least on your blog you can post as many pictures as you want! That being said I love how much faster IG is with commenting and getting to know people!

I have definitely taken advantage of the convenience of IG since Q was born, but I am trying to be more diligent about getting my thoughts into writing instead of just posting pics. It's all about time though, and that is a premium these days :-/

Blogging is so much "meatier"! I get ill if people write a mini-novel under an IG photo, and I've said a million times, "sheesh, they should just blog if they have all of that to say!" :) That being said, I'm pretty obsessed with Instagram and it's instant awesome-ness!

I have been saying the same thing for about a year! I feel like so many of my favorite bloggers stopped blogging as much and IG instead-simply out of convenience. Myself included! Its easy, its quick, and we're busy people :) I am trying to get better about blogging more though, because I do think like you said, it's 'home'!

Yes! I totally agree, I love IG because it is so easy to keep up with people and I love taking pictures and sharing. I can say that I honestly love IG more since my profile is private I can control who's following me. That being said, I still enjoy keeping up with my favorite bloggers blogs and will still visit their blogs regardless. :) I know that some people hate their feed being flooded by the people's photos (which I personally could care less unless someone uploads 50 at a time true story someone has done this in my feed LOL!). But anyway people will unfollow for flooding their feed. I like that on your blog you can do what you want and post as many pictures as you like. :) Blogs also feel a little more personal to me.

I am a huge Instagram fan, but I would not say it it going to completely replace blogging. I don't like when Instagram gets too promotional; I definitely love the inside glimpses into bloggers' lives. It's a nice compliment to what they are writing about on their blog.

I feel like a lot of the bloggers that I love and have followed are switching to IG much more than regular blogging. Which makes me a little sad. I enjoy IG tons and I love being able to direct people from there to my blog, but I certainly don't want it to replace it. My blog is my journal and all of my pictures and stories go there(including my instapics- HELLO instafriday!), I wouldn't ever want to replace it.

I think I tend to use ig a lot more, especially when I'm busy. But there is something about blogging that I don't ever want to give up!

I totally get what you're saying. I couldn't ever leave my blog or stop reading others, because that's my favorite. Being able to not only see the pictures but hear the stories (novels) even, behind them. I do love IG, but for me it'll never ever take the place of blogging. And, for you it'd better not either. ;) I love reading your stuff.
