The things I wish I could pull off.

I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. I mean, it's totally awesome...but also... it's not so awesome. I am always pinning things I love (obviously I love it or I wouldn't pin it, duh), but they aren't necessarily things I can pull off. Whether it be makeup, an outfit, a DIY craft or recipe. Most times, though, I just get pin happy, and by the time I go back and look through my pin boards, I'm thinking "why the heck did I pin this? I will never do it!" Nor would I be able to even if I tried. But the thing that bugs me, is that in those happy pinning moments, I'm so so so excited to pull of whatever it is I'm pinning. But no.

Here are a few examples of the things I could never pull off:

1) I love the look of a long, flowy skirt (not to be mistaken with a maxi skirt), belted of course - with a feminine shirt tucked in. But the truth is, my physique is the complete opposite of the girl in this photo. She's tall & thin. And I'm short and curvy. I just can't pull this outfit off. Just no.

2) The smokey eye. Gosh darn this smokey eye makeup being pinned all over pinterest. Ugh. I love this look but there are 2 reasons why I can't pull this look off. 1) My eyes can't take a lot of dark, heavy  makeup. I have sort of smallish squinty eyes and so the "smokey" look just makes me look like a witch. And 2) I suck at putting makeup on. I don't have the skillz, yo. Simple as that.

3) Horizontal stripes on my wall. Believe me, I have attempted to paint horizontal stripes (post on that coming soon, just you wait!). But I just cannot do it well because I lack one very important thing: Patience. And that is crucial when attempting to paint stripes. Trust me, if stripes are ever painted on my walls, I will be hiring a professional.

4) The perfect maternity shot. Have you been pregnant? I'm betting that at some point in your pregnancy, you pinned a photo like this. You know, this sort of dreamy, whimsical maternity shot that makes pregnancy seem so light & fluffy & perfect. Truth is, I could never pull this kind of photo off (well I could take this kind of photo, but that's my job!). But I could never look like this IN a photograph, because let's face it, when I'm pregnant, I am bloated and frumpy looking. So this amazing kind of maternity shot? It ain't happenin' for me. (And no, I'm not pregnant, nor do I plan to be anytime soon. This is just a hypothetical) ;-)

5) The top knot/sloppy bun. Ugh. This is so frustrating because I want to have long, thick hair that I can throw up into a messy bun or top knot and have it actually look cute. My hair?? It's way too fine and thin to ever make it work. I've attempted it in the past and it looked OK, but never how I envisioned it.

6) A Vegetable Garden. I get so jealous of the people who have their own veggie gardens. In theory, I suppose it's pretty simple to create your own little garden, but me?? I hate gardening. I hate yard work of any kind, and maintaining a vegetable garden falls into that category. I could never pull it off.

Well there's some of the things on my list that I only wish I could pull off. What things top your list?

I have to agree with all of these, except I am making headway in the smoky eye department. My list would include about 98% of what is on pinterest...I am just not a DIY person at all!

Oh that top bun... specifically the sock bun. I've bought two different bun styler thingys and cut a sock up. Doesnt' flippin work.

This is HILARIOUS. And so true!!! The maternity shot for sure... lol. I have thousands of pins on "proper hospital photorgraphy" and "top 10 shots to get during labor and delivery"... you know how many I got? NONE. And the few pics I did get, I look a whale. So, yeah... I get the maternity shot thing. In our dreams.

Oh Mandy. I feel the same way about all of the above! I would love to do horizontal stripes for baby girl's room but I know it would be a big mess! And the bun? I can't figure it out but it NEVER looks like that on my head :)

and let's talk about pinning crafts and fun things for these boys! man alive! i have a whole board dedicated to fun crafts i would love rawley to do, but this kid will never sit for anything like that. nor does he even care. why am i kidding myself with this board, i should just delete. i hear ya about the top bun thing, i dream of it but my hair looks funky like that and it's too thin and has weird baby hair creases everywhere. never looks good. i can't pull off a cute "messy, cute, but casual" look. i did however take your suggestion and bought the naked 2 palette the other day...LOVE!

I completely relate to the smokey eye dilemma- every time I try it I look like I got punched in the face and got a black eye. Only light, neutrals for me!

If you go to the MAC makeup booth, they will find a good color for YOUR smoky eye. It may not be black, but it may be like, a cool brown color? They will also legit teach you how to do it. For free. Except I always buy a billion things.
I look dumb wearing belts and top knots, and chambray. Sometimes I feel like a blogging failure. ;-)

It's so funny, cause I was actually on Pinterest yesterday thinking the same exact thing. I can relate to a lot of these!!! Holla!

Haha, me too!! I totally relate to this. I get Pinterest happy and pin so many things, but will I ever make that recipe? No. Will I ever really try an outfit like that? Probably not. It's a fun time waster, though!

Pinterest makes me feel inadequate sometimes lol.

This is hilariously true! Probably 90% of the ideas I've tried from Pinterest have been total fails! I still enjoy looking at all of the pretty things and being a dreamer though. lol! :)

I can pull off a sloppy garden with easy veggies that don't require a lot of tending....but the smokey eye would look awful on me. Whenever I try dark eye makeup, it seems to really age me and I don't like that!

This is too funny and I totally agree! My "She's Got the Look" board might as well be titled "What I'd wear if I was tall and skinny". HA!

I'm a teacher. And I'm a GOOD teacher. But the games with 173939 handmade matchy-matchy pieces I pin all the time? Never.

This is SO funny! I think I agree with just about all of them!

I'm with you! Particularly the pregnant picture -- I never got big enough! So I never took prof pictures :( So stupid.

Um...besides the fact that I completely agree with all of these (except the garden, I love gardening), I really and truly appreciate that you used the phrase "skillz, yo." you won me over, right there. :) A girl after my own heart. as for the rest of it, I feel you on the short and curvy, non cooperative hair, and hot mess of a pregnant lady - ness. Maybe in my next life I'll be six foot tall with perfect beachy hair and "all baby" when I'm preggo instead of 50 pounds heavier, right?

And one more random thought...another reason I can't pull off a smokey eye? I'm a mom, and a nurse, and I'm pretty sure I'd get all kids of crazy looks from both my husband, child and patients if I was rocking my scrubs with a smokey eye. lol! Okay i'm done :)

this is why I don't ever get on Pinterest! All of the outfits on there are made for girls that are 5'10'' and weigh like 120 lbs. That's just not me! I'm trying to grow my hair out so I can do fun things like that bun but I don't know that it's going to happen...

LOL I totally hear ya! Great post! I truthfully deactivated my pinterest account a while ago b/c it was frustrating to see stuff people pinned or did themselves - FOr instance - Who the heck has time all day to make their own pasta from scratch ... and I Mean picking the eggs from the local farmer, grinding their own flour, kneading the dough for 4 hours while watching their perfect children play quietly by themselves. LMAO. Who does that?! I don't know one mom that can do most of that stuff on pinterst and truthfully it was stressing me out thinking I might me the only moron mom that wasn't making home made silly putty or creating science experiments from scratch. Or building my kids a treehouse from sacred 'green' wood imported from an island off the coast of africa...
My point is ... I guess pinning is all fun and dreams - no need to feel like you need to live up to any of it :) And I am pretty sure you could pull off the long skirty thing by the way :)

Love this post. I may have to borrow the idea sometime! So I am right there with you on a lot of these.
The belted skirt? - too curvy
Smokey eye? - punched
stripes? - never tried...I am afraid
maternity photo? - NO WAY. Bloat city unless I get it done way early in the pregnancy. And BTW, you remember me not even being able to get up off the deck once I sat down, that is not sweet looking.
Top bun? - I could sort-of do this when my hair was long and curly. But it would not be a quick feat.
Veggie garden? - yes, we have had a little luck with this, but I want to try something other than lettuce and tomatoes. Those are easy...although the tomato this year did not do so well.

I'm right there w/ ya on most of these. I so wish I could throw my hair up in a messy bun and have it look cute. I did my first ever sock bun today and it took me forever to get it to look cute and stay in! Ugh!

I'm with you on the top knot. My hair can never pull anything off. Boo.

Oh, how I LOVE your honesty!

Julie S. said...

I STILL can't get the top knot and honestly, you can HAVE my garden! Hubs insisted and I HATE doing it! :)

I tend to go months on end without even using pinterest except to pin my own posts and then months when I'm an addict But like you most of the pins will never get done. The striped wall though- well let's just say I didn't even attempt it myself. $600.00 later I have a striped nursery! :) Way over priced but worth every penny. It took the guys two days to complete and it's perfect.

I can relate to all of this so well haha
